Luang Prabang 2 Days Kayaking and Rafting




Luang Prabang KayakingIf you like a bit more action on the river then give this a go. A slightly livelier river with more rapids. You will also have the chance to go cliff jumping and stay overnight in a village, all this while enjoying the spectacular scenery of this magical place.

   

Day 1. Luang Prabang – Ban Sop Chack – Ban Hat Houy

 

We start off in Luang Prabang and head towards the Lao Lue village of Ban Sop Chack, around 2hours drive to the kayaking starting point. After a short introduction to paddling, the basics of kayaking and a safety talk. We then practice for a bit before heading off downstream, where we encounter rapids of grade 1-3 which are suitable for beginners to intermediate level for about 2 hours. We continue onwards downstream again until stopping for a Lao style local picnic lunch which is prepared for us in the most scenic of locations. After lunch we take a relaxing break, swimming and cliff jumping into the deep river. In the afternoon we continue on down the river, along the way we might see the locals as they go about their daily tasks such as fishing and planting vegetables on the banks until arriving in Ban Hat Houy (Khmu hill tribe), here we spend the night in a home stay with one of the local families, which is a truly amazing cultural experience.

Luang Prabang KayakingDay 2. Ban Hat Houy – Ban Peiar – Luang Prabang

 

After enjoying our overnight stay at the village and breakfast we continue, as we continue paddling, the scenery of the Nam Xuang gets more dramatic and beautiful with impressive limestone cliffs, for 2 hours, after lunch we continue onwards until arriving at the next section of rapids. These rapids are between grade 2-4 (during the wet season) before approaching Ban Peiar, where we transfer you back to Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang Kayak Nam OuThis 2 day trip consists mostly of easy-going paddling on calm water, perfect for taking in the scenery with some light exercise. You will also have the chance to stop off and visit some villages and sites of interest including sampling the infamous Lao whiskey, responsible for many a bad decision!

 

Day 1. Luang Prabang – Ban Houy Fai – Ban Hat Korh.

 

The day starts off with a one hour and forty minute road trip to the kayaking starting point at Ban Houy Fai. You will receive some basic paddling instruction and practice before heading off down the river. The first stretch takes us through a few rapids of class 1-2 which are suitable for beginners, for 2 hours. Along the way we visit a few villages which located on the riverbanks. Here we have an opportunity to get more insights into the cultures of the Khmu and Lao Lue ethnic groups. After this we carry on downstream once again until lunch time where we stop for a lunch at a scenic spot on the riverside. After enjoying our lunch there is time for relaxing and swimming, the afternoon is spent paddling in a calmer section of the river. Along the way we might see local people fishing and tending to their vegetable plantations on the banks. The day of kayaking ends at Ban Hat Korh, here we stay overnight with a local family.

Luang Prabang Kayak Nam OuDay 2. Ban Hat Korh – Pak Ou Cave – Ban Xang Hai – Luang Prabang.

 

After enjoying breakfast, we head downriver once again. Today is spent in calm water where the beautiful scenery of the Nam Ou transforms into a spectacular limestone landscape, more dramatic and more beautiful with towering limestone cliffs on the river banks, here we stop for lunch. After relaxing and swimming we then continue on down the river until reaching the confluence the Nam Ou and Mekong rivers. Here lies the holy Pak Ou cave which is filled with thousands of Buddha statues and images, after our visit to the cave we continue down the Mekong for one hour to approach the Lao whiskey making village (Ban Xang Hai), we learn about how these products are made using the traditional techniques which have been handed down from generation to generation. Here a pick up will be waiting to transfer you back to Luang Prabang.
