Luang Prabang 1 Day Kayaking and Rafting

 

 

Laos Outdoor Luang Prabang KayakingIf you like it a little bit rougher on the water then you should give this a go. Slightly bigger rapids make for a bouncier ride. There is also time to swim, relax and take in the scenery.

 

Luang Prabang – Ban Na Phoh – Ban Hat Kang – Luang Prabang.

 

We start off in Luang Prabang and head towards the Lao Lue village of Ban Na Phoh, around a one and half hour drive to the kayaking starting point. After a short introduction to paddling, the basics of kayaking and a safety talk, we then practice for a bit before heading off downstream, where we encounter rapids of grade 1-3 which are suitable for beginner to intermediate level, for about 1 hour. We continue onwards downstream before stopping for a Lao style local picnic lunch which is prepared for us in the most scenic of locations, after enjoying our lunch there is time to relax and swim. The afternoon is spent paddling until we arrive at the next section of rapids. These rapids are between grade 2-3, depending on the time of the year, before approaching Ban Hat Kang, where we transfer you back to Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang – Ban Houy Leung – Ban Hat Korh – Luang Prabang

 

The day starts off with a one and half hour road trip on route No: 13 North to the kayaking starting point. You will receive some basic paddling instruction and practice before heading off down the river. The first stretch takes us through a few rapids of class 1-2 which are suitable for beginners, for about 2 hours. Along the way we visit a few villages which are located on the riverbanks. Here we have more opportunities to get greater insights into the cultures of the Khmu and Lao Lue ethnic groups. After this we carry on downstream once again until lunch time when we stop for lunch at a scenic spot on the riverside. After enjoying our lunch there is time for relaxing and swimming, the afternoon is spent paddling on a calmer section of the river. Along the way we will see local people fishing and tending to their vegetable plantations on the banks until we reach Ban Hat Korh, here a pick up will be waiting to transfer you back to Luang Prabang.

Laos Outdoor Luang Prabang KayakingIf you enjoy getting wet then this is for you.  A leisurely paddle down a beautiful river, a visit to a local village, swimming and a stop at an ancient historical site.  A perfect way to combat the heat!

 

Luang Prabang – Ban Suan – Ban Ann – Luang Prabang.

We depart from our office and drive for 40 minutes southwards to the starting point at Ban Suan village. Here, before you go on the river, a guide will give you basic paddle instructions and a safety talk, we then paddle downstream  for around 30 minutes before taking our first stop at a  village of Khmu-Hmong tribes, who are two different minority groups living together and sharing the same school. We continue onwards and paddle down to Tad Sae waterfall, lunch is set up here. After enjoying a picnic lunch and swimming we continue to paddle through the beautiful landscape until reaching the tomb of a French explorer who died in the 19th century, the last stop of the day, before taking a 20 minute drive to town.

Luang Prabang – Ban Somsanouk – Pak Ou Cave – Ban Xang Hai.

 

We depart from our office and take a 1 hour drive to the starting point at Ban Somsanouk, after a short instructional lesson of basic kayaking etc. we head off  to paddle downstream enjoying the unspoilt scenery of the Nam Ou River where we see increasingly dramatic and beautiful limestone cliffs until we reach the place where the Nam Ou and Mekong rivers meet.(Lao style picnic lunch is served along the way)  Here we visit the holy Pak Ou cave which is filled with thousands of Buddha statues , we take a look around and learn about the history of  these amazing caves, after the caves we continue to paddle down the Mekong River for 1 hour which takes us to the whisky making village of Ban Xang Hai, which is well known, as the villagers have been producing Lao whisky with traditional techniques from generation to generation since the 19th century, from here we take our transport back to Luang Prabang.
